Freeze the heat: Ways to fend off the heat blast

With most parts of Sri Lanka being hit by an unbearable heat wave, and the temperature rising above the caution level, the experts have issued numerous warnings and urged the people to take safety measures.

Inevitably, with the temperature levels soaring high, it can ultimately cause health issues for the human body like dehydration, skin rashes, depression, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. Being aware of how to stay safe during such rapid climatic change could help you stay safe from sicknesses. It was observed by dermatologists that prickly heat and illnesses are very common among children due to this extreme heat.

The groups of people who are most vulnerable to this heat wave prevailing in Sri Lanka are elderly people, young children, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and people who are homeless. Hence, being aware and taking prompt action to be in the safe zone has become extremely important.

 

 

  •  Clothes should not be worn tight as it causes discomfort, and sweat and result in prickly heat and dermatitis. It is advisable to wear soft materials which are light-colored.
  •  Sweat rashes could be prevented by applying lotions that contain calamine or menthol.
  •  Increase the intake of fluids such as water, and juices made from citrus fruit like oranges, lime, and lemon.
  •  Take vitamins, potassium, and minerals through fruits as excessive sweating causes the shedding of minerals.
  •  Avoid carbonated drinks to minimize the contraction of viral infections.
  •  Wear sunglasses as they filter UV rays. It is even recommended for children to wear shades when traveling in the sun during this period of time as wearing sunglasses soothes the eyes and even comes as a remedy for headaches that worsens when exposed to the blazing glare of the sun. It is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding when choosing the lens for your eyes that come in various coatings.

By staying informed and taking steps to stay safe, it is easy to mitigate the risks associated with the extreme heat and ultimately safeguard public health.
