Vichinthya Nilaweera emerged the Boys’ Under-16 singles champion of the 106th National Tennis Championship by recording an easy two-sets-to-nil win over Zaidh Zihar in the final played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.
Three other finals were worked off concurrently which was the junior doubles events with the pairs Lisal Goonetileke/Methvan Wijemanne in the Boys’ Under-14, Nishita Goonetileke/Thilina Dissanayake in the Boys’ Under-16 and Chathurya Nilaweera/Thehan Wijemanne in the Boys’ Under-18 coming out victorious to emerge champions.
Meanwhile, in the semifinal encounters, the pairs of Dinara de Silva/Saajida Razick in the Girls’ Under-16 and Thehan Wijemanne/Anjalika Kurera received walkovers to qualify to the final.
The championship will continue today.
