Sri Lanka will field a 20-member contingent for the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, which will be held from December 7 to 17 in Uzbekistan.
This event was earlier scheduled to be held in Singapore from October 20 to 24 but had to be moved to another country due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a result the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) decided to conduct the tournament in Uzbekistan in parallel to the IWF World Weightlifting Championships.
However, Sri Lanka’s hopes of fielding a larger contingent for the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships was dashed as the IWF decided to discard the junior and youth segments of the meet.
The Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation (SLWF) was planning to field a 20-member squad for the senior category and a 10-member squad for the junior and youth segment of the tournament.
However, SLWF Secretary G. Nishanthan said Sri Lanka will now field only a 20-member squad for the Commonwealth Games following the changes done by the IWF). The Sri Lanka Squad will leave for Uzbekistan on October 5.
