Half tons by Hiran Jayasundara and Mithira Thenura and a five wicket haul by Lahiru Amarasekera paved the way for St. Joseph’s college to record a convincing 85 run win over traditional rivals St. Peter’s college in the 47th Limited Over encounter played at the SSC ground yesterday.
The morning session of play saw Jayasundara who cracked 54 and Thenura 52 coming to the rescue of St. Joseph’s after skipper Sheran Fonseka won the toss and elected to take first lease of the wicket.
The pair came together when the Josephians was in a spot of bother with the score on 36 for 3 in the 11th when they put on a valuable 101 run stand for the fourth wicket to help them end with a respectable score of 200 runs.
St Peter’s in their run chase underwent the same fate and was struggling on 70 for 5 in the 17th over.
Big match top scorer Shenal Boteju and skipper Nipunaka Fonseka were the only batsmen to put in some resistance but right arm spinner Amarasekera ran through the late order to bowl the Peterites out for a low score of 115 runs for St. Joseph’s to record their 24th win of the series.
