Abeykoon clocks 9.96 seconds to become fastest in Asia

South Asian sprint champion Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon recorded the fastest time by an Asian in 2022 when he clocked 9.96 seconds in the 100 metre men’s event in a world athletic challenge meet in Switzerland yesterday.
Abeykoon becomes the first Sri Lankan and South Asian to break the 10 second barrier in the 100 metre event.
He holds the Sri Lanka record in the 100m (9.96), 150m (15.16) and 200m (20.37).
Sri Lanka Athletics confirmed that Abeykoon has set a new South Asian record.


Yupun is among the top ten timings of 100m men’s event in Asian region.


Abeykoon has qualified for the 2022 World Athletic Championship  (USA) and will represent Sri Lanka at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.


Cuba’s Mena Reynier (9.99) was placed second and France’s Zeze Meba Michael (10.00) took third position.
