Air Force Women clinch national judo title

Air Force Women clinched the overall championship at the 61st National Judo Championship 2024, marking a historic win after a decade.

The championship was held at the Sri Lanka Judo Association in Colombo, with the awards ceremony taking place at the same venue.

Chairman of Air Force Judo, Air Vice-Marshal Damian Weerasinghe, Secretary, Air Force Judo and Group Captain M. A. D. C. I. Gunasinghe, Assistant Secretaries of Air Force Judo, Wing Commander H. D. T. N. S. Hettiarachchi and other senior officers from the tri-services graced the awards ceremony.

The Air Force Women’s Judo Team emerged victorious, securing the Championship title with an outstanding haul of six Gold, three Silver and nine Bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the Air Force Men’s Judo Team delivered a commendable performance achieving the overall runners-up position with an impressive tally of four Gold, two Silver and five Bronze medals.

Adding to the team’s success, Sergeant Chamara Dharmawardana was named as the Best Male Judo Player for the eighth consecutive year while Aircraftwoman Kalpani Jayaweera earned the title of Best Female Judo Player.
