Over 143 teams are set to participate in the Western Province Netball Association (WPNA) organised 66th Eva All-Island Open Netball Championship 2022, which will be held on December 3 and 4 at the Air Force Grounds in Rifle Green.
This tournament was not held for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and this time all leading clubs in the country are expected to compete, Secretary WPNA, Rio Ramlan told the Daily Mirror yesterday.
The event will be sponsored by ICL Brands (Pvt) Limited and the significant feature in this year’s tournament is the number of participants from schools where 97 teams will be vying for honours.
The tournament will be conducted in categories of - ‘A’ Division Open Women’s (five teams), Open Men’s (ten teams), ‘B’ Division (20 teams), Schools Division Under-15 (37 teams), Under-17 (33 teams), Under-19 (27 teams) and Veterans Over-40 (11 teams).
Sri Lanka Army SC emerged champions at the last tournament held two years ago.
This tournament could also turn into a talent search for the national pool, in preparation for the 2023 Asian Youth Netball Championships in South Korea and for the World Netball Championship in South Africa.
