Former national cricket captain Aravinda de Silva will head a Technical Advisory Committee to the Ministry of Sports, which will also function as a Cricket Committee at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
The four-member committee includes fellow Cricket World Cup winners Roshan Mahanama and Muttiah Muralitharan, with former national captain and current Marylebone Cricket Club President Kumar Sangakkara also a member of the committee.
In its role as a Technical Advisory Committee, it will advise the Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa, ministry officials and the National Sports Council (NSC) on matters related to Sri Lanka Cricket, a press release issued by the Ministry of Youth and Sports read.
It has also been tasked with working closely with SLC “in order to uplift the standard of cricket both domestically and internationally, thereby ensuring and inculcating a sustainable high standard of cricket in Sri Lanka,” the release clarified.
The Minister also nominated the committee to serve as SLC’s Cricket Committee, a recommendation which SLC put into effect not long after, and confirmed in a statement of its own.
The appointment of this committee is the latest in a series of recommendations that Minister Rajapaksa and NSC Chairman Mahela Jayawardene discussed with SLC last week, which is aimed at reversing the poor run of form of the national cricket team that suffered 2-0 series whitewashes in South Africa and at home against England.
De Silva, who has also twice served as Chairman of SLC’s Selection Committee, Chaired the Cricket Committee for about a year before resigning in 2017.
