Ashen Karunaratne in action

Ashen Karunaratne of Wesley College shone in the recently concluded 48th National Sports Games Weightlifting Championships held in Polonnaruwa.
He lifted a total weight of 228 kilos, which was comprised of two categories of 103 kilos in the snatch system and 125 kilos in the clean and jerk category of the Men’s 61kg weight class category.
Ashen’s performance was the first time that a Wesleyite had been successful in a local weightlifting competition and in the process he reached the qualifying weight to participate in the forthcoming Commonwealth Junior Weightlifting Championships in September this year.
Ashen’s success has been due to the effort and dedication put in by his first coach Ranjith Perera and C. I. Nicholas, his present coach.
He earned a slot to participate at the 48th NSG after a successful stint at the Gampaha and Western Province events. (MSA)
