Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando on Thursday replaced injured Binura Fernando in their squad at the Twenty20 World Cup, tournament organisers said.
Binura, himself an injury replacement, bowled just five balls in his team’s loss to hosts Australia on Tuesday before going off the field with a hamstring strain in Perth.
Binura said he would take a break from cricket considering his own mental health.
“Absolutely devastated but it is what it is. I’ve decided to take a little break from cricket thinking about my own mental health,” a statement on Instagram read.
He also hit back at criticism he has received on social media.
“This doesn’t mean it’s curtains closed for me. Clowns on social media might think it’s the end of me but sorry to say it won’t be the end of me till I STOP. I’ll be back on the horse, bigger better and stronger,” the statement also read.
Asitha, who has played three T20 matches for the national team, will travel from Sri Lanka and join the rest of the squad in Australia, the International Cricket Council said.
Sri Lanka, who won the T20 Asia Cup last month, have two points in the Super 12 stage and will next play group toppers New Zealand in Sydney on Saturday.
Binura is the third Sri Lankan fast bowler to be replaced by injury, with Dilshan Madushanka and Dushmantha Chameera also picking up injuries after the squad reached Australia.
