Sri Lanka’s first Test captain Bandula Warnapura will contest the upcoming Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) elections alongside former SLC Vice President K. Mathivanan. Warnapura, a first time contestant, has given his nomination for the post of Vice President, as part of a three-member team that put forward Mathivanan for the post of President and Nishantha Ranatunga for Secretary.
They have not made nominations for the other positions that will be contested.
Mathivanan, who was elected as a Vice President at the 2019 SLC election before resigning last July, will hope to unseat the incumbent President Shammi Silva seeking re-election.
The Silva camp is made up of largely the same office bearers currently in the SLC Executive Committee.
Ravin Wickramaratne and Jayantha Dharmadasa will run for the two Vice President posts, while Mohan de Silva will contest for Secretary, positions that all three hold in the current administration.
Dharmadasa has crossed camps having challenged Silva for the post of President at the 2019 SLC elections, as part of a group that included Mathivanan and Arjuna and Nishantha Ranatunga.
However, despite rivaling and losing to Silva by a 59-vote margin, Dharmadasa was appointed Vice President of SLC when Mathivanan resigned last year.
Chryshantha Kapuwatte will again contest the Assistant Secretary post and Lasantha Wickremasinghe will look to return as Treasurer.
It is understood that Ven. Battaramulle Seelarathna Thera, who has previously contested the country’s presidential elections, has also handed over his nomination for the Vice President’s post.
