The Colombo District Volleyball Association (CDVA) has decided to launch a special programme to develop volleyball in the Colombo District. The aim of this programme is to promote the game among schools and clubs in Colombo.

The CDVA hopes to carry out their development programme in 2021 by conducting invitation tournaments within the District for Colombo schools and clubs, CDVA President, Mahinda Herath Bandara told the Daily Mirror yesterday.

In conjunction with the Institute of National Sports Science (INSS), the CDVA hopes to conduct programmes for volleyball coaches to upgrade their technical knowledge. They also hope to give priority to a directive of Sports Minister, Namal Rajapaksa to have a volleyball ground in every village, Bandara said.

Under this project the CDVA hopes to select the best volleyball team in each village and provide them with all facilities.

The CDVA has planned to organise a tournament in January 2021 by inviting one Men’s and Women’s team from each of the 25 Districts which did not feature in the Super League competition.

Cash prizes of Rs. 75,000 to the winner, Rs. 50,000 to the runners-up and Rs. 35,000 to the third placed team will be awarded for this tournament with several sponsors already giving their consent, according to the CDVA.

The CDVA President expects to introduce volleyball to at least 50 to 100 players at National level each year.
