CR and FC lived up to the expectations of their fans when they pulled off a comfortable 22 points to 18 win over Army SC in the inter-club Nippon Paint Rugby league encounter played at Longden Place on Sunday.
CR took a 17-10 lead at lemons and made up their points through two goals a try and a penalty to a goal a try and two penalties scored by Army SC.
A low-profile game by CR making the first scoring in the 17th minute with Raveen de Silva going over for a try and Thenuka Nanayakkara making the conversion.
CR stretched their lead nine minutes later through a try scored by Manilka Ruberu and Nanayakkara making no mistake with the easy conversion saw them lead 14-0.
Army SC succeeded to reduce the home teams lead from a try scored by Sudarka Dikkumbura.
From here on the two sides shared honours before CR went ahead off a penalty booted over by Chathura Seneviratne while Army just before the short whistle too replied with Dilshan Perera booting over a penalty which saw the sides change with CR leading 17-10.
The resumption saw Dilshan Perera reducing the deficit for Army by booting over a penalty but CR undeterred succeeded to stretch the lead again through an unconverted try by Kalindu Nandila and though Sudarka Dikkumbura went over an unconverted try which was his second of the match in the latter stages, it was not going to prevent a win for CR.
CR having ended the league campaign on a winning note by chalking up their sixth win, in the process ended as the second best team and will now along with Kandy SC, Havelock SC and Navy SC will battle it out in the Super Round while CH and FC along with Air Force SC, Police SC and Army SC will contest each other for the Plate title.
