Champions League football revived after three years

The Champions League football tournament is to revive on May 13 after a lapse of three years with the blessings of Football Sri Lanka (FSL).   


The Champions League football tournament was last held in 2019 with SL Army SC being champions and Colombo FC runners-up.   


Fourteen teams who did not take part in the Super League have been selected for the Champions League namely Saunders SC, Negombo Youth SC, Anuradhapura Solid SC, Matara SC, Beruwela Super Sun SC, Kurunegala Pelicans SC, Java Lane SC, Nawalapitiya Crystal Palace SC, Police SC, Serendib SC, New Star SC, Moragasmulla SC, SLTB SC and Jaffna St. Mary’s SC.   


A total number 0f 91 matches will be played in the tournament with 13 matches per team which will conducted in a league format.   


FSL has given permission for local teams to field three foreign players and three Under 21 players per team in this tournament. According to the tournament rules each team will have to include one Under 21 player per match. Several teams have signed contracts with foreign players upto now.   


The champion team will be awarded Rs 1,000,000 and the runners-up Rs 750,000.   


A special discussion was held with officials and coaches of the 14 teams with FSL President Umar Jaswar at the Football House in Colombo yesterday.
