Sri Lanka will open their Commonwealth Games 2022 Rugby Sevens campaign on July 29 with the men taking on New Zealand and the women meeting England. The rugby competition will be held from July 29-31 at Coventry Stadium, Birmingham.
There are 16 teams in the men’s competition, including hosts England, with nine teams qualifying after the World Rugby Sevens series and six teams qualifying after regional competitions.
Eight women’s teams are participating, including the host England team, with three of them qualifying after the World Rugby Sevens series, while the rest qualifying after regional competitions.
Sri Lanka’s men’s and women’s rugby teams qualified after their performance at the 2021 Asia Rugby Sevens tournament.
Sri Lanka is in pool ‘A’ of the men’s competition along with New Zealand, England, and Samoa. They will face England and Samoa on July 30.
There are two pools in the women’s competition. Sri Lanka is in pool A with New Zealand, Canada, and England. They will meet New Zealand and Canada on July 30.
The men’s and women’s classification matches and medal round matches will take place on July 31. The Sri Lankan squads are yet to be announced.
