Police SC’s fly-half Yohan Peiris inspired his team to a crucial 29 – 12 victory over Air Force SC in the ongoing Dialog Inter-Club “A’ Division League second-round encounter worked off at Police Park today (14).
The winners collected their points through three goals, one try and a penalty while Air Force responded with only a goal and a try.
Police SC opened the scoring in the fourth minute when hooker Rasith Silva scored an unconverted try mid-right.
Police extended their lead two minutes later when wing three-quarter Kasun Rajakaruna made a break and ran around to score his first try. Yohan added the extras to amend the scores to 12 – 0.
The hosts pulled themselves further ahead when former Josephian centre and right-winger Shan Akila dived over for a try near the mid-right. With the conversion successful, and a 22-meter penalty by Yohan three minutes later, the lead was increased to 22 – 0.
In the 35th minute, a moment of individual brilliance from Yohan saw him score a try at the right corner flag which he then easily converted.
The scores read 29 – 0 at half-time.
Air Force managed to gather their first points of the game when second-row Thimira Amanda dazzled his way past the Police SC defenders in the 65th minute to touch down.
In the 75th minute Air Force SC number eight Saraka Weralla crashed through for a cracking try off a rolling maul. Fullback Gayantha Iddamalgoda converted with ease.
It was too late for the Airmen however, as Police, who although were kept at bay throughout the second-half, coasted to a 29 – 12 victory.
