Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone gets underway tomorrow

The Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone 3 tennis tournament conducted by ITA will get underway from tomorrow at the SLTA tennis courts in
Greenpath, Colombo.   


This will be one of the biggest tennis events to be held in Sri Lanka. 

 
The tournament will see the participation of eight countries namely Cambodia, Iran, Malaysia, Jordan, Pacific Oceania (Region), Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and host   Sri Lanka.   
The countries will contest in two round robin group matches and the top two teams will be promoted to group two while the two teams placed second will contest in a promotional play-off match.   


The top three countries will qualify for the Davis Cup World Group 2 and the last two teams of the eight teams participating will be relegated to the Asia Oceania Group 4 next year. The loser of the play-off between the two second placed teams, and the two teams placed third will remain in Group 3 next year.   


Sri Lanka will be playing in Group 3 for the first time having been promoted and the team comprises five young members. The leading duo in the five team are Thehan Wijemanne and Chathurya Nilaweera and the pair made their Davis Cup debuts in 2020 and 2021,   


The other three members of the team Ashen Silva who participated in last year’s tournament, Dhilvan Herath and Apna Perera who will be making their Davis Cup debut. Renouk Wijemanne is non playing captain cum coach of the Sri Lanka team. (MSA)
