Davis Cup Asia Oceanic Group III in Jordan Syria trounce Sri Lanka

Syria beat Sri Lanka 3-0 to continue their winning streak in the Davis Cup Asia Oceanic group III match-up being worked off in Jordan yesterday.


Yasith de Silva after going down  4/6 in the first set  fought back in the second to win it 6/2. But his opponent Yacoub Makzoume was in a superior class winning the third set 7/6 to take the game away from the Sri Lankan. This encounter went on for over three hours. 


Thehan Wijemanne who played the Syrian number 1 Kareem Al Allaf fought hard before going down 6/0 in the opening set.  He stormed back to tie the second set 4/4 at one point of the game but lost out in the end 6/4.
In the doubles game Chatura Nilaweera and Thehan Wijemanne were beaten by Amer Naow and Kareem Al Allaf 6/4, 7/6 for the Syrians to claim a clean sweap. Meanwhile Hong Kong beat Malaysia 3/0 and Vietnam beat Qatar 2/1 in day two matches.


Today Malaysia will meet Kuwait in Group A while in Group B Qatar will face the Oceania outfit. In Group C, Sri Lanka will meet Jordan. This will be a must win game for the Sri Lankans.
