Colombo, Dec. 5 (Daily Mirror) - Havelock Sports Club one of the top rugby playing sides in Sri Lanka with a history spanning108 years will no doubt be a side to be reckoned with this season and to make them achieve their feat FLYHISPORTS has come forward to sponsor the club for the second successive year .
FLYHISPORTS a brand name based in Melbourne, Australia are at present involved in supporting a range of sports activities involving rugby, athletics, soccer, basketball and netball to name a few.
“We are proud to continue the support to develop Sri Lanka sports by joining hands with Havelock SC, one of the pioneering rugby clubs in the country and we are happy to support with a rugby playing club which is a household name in Sri Lanka said Cedric Anthony CEO of FLYHISPORTS.
He further stated that in addition the company is also pleased to inform that they for the first time will collaborate with Havelock SC to establish and international standard ‘Rugby Academy” in the country with the aim of of promoting rugby at grass root level and to nurture future players. This will no doubt be a game changer in the domestic rugby circuit he concluded.
Joing hands as co-sponors is Prima Group Sri Lanka, a company who too is coming forward for the second successive year and has been in the forefront in supporting sports at junior level to reach the highest levels in the likes of rugby, cricket, golf,, athletics and many ,more.
“We are not going to take it easy said Azmir Fajudeen who will be leading the Havies this season and we are not going to underestimate any team and we will go into every game as a final.
The Havies posses a talented bunch of youngsters from the leading rugby playing schools in the island Isipathana, St. Peter’s, DSS, Trinity, Zahira and Wesley who has been in the forefront of the recently concluded schools rugby season. Sandesh Jayawickrama and Janidu Fernando will co-vice captains.
Apart from the youngsters who have joined the club they have raked in two foreign players of Sri Lankan parents in Elhan Loos from Australia and Oliver Buckle from UK .
This season the club has given the coaching responsibilty to Saliya Kumara as head coach who will be supported by Dhanushka Boteju. The team led by former Royal ruggerite Azmir Fajudeen got off to a flying start by annihilating Air Force SC 49-8 in the first match played over the weekend. Pix: Nimalsiri Edirisinghe
