Football Sri Lanka (FSL) has decided to indefinitely postpone the election of office-bearers once again yesterday. The Department of Sports Development and FSL had decided to hold the thrice postponed elections on June 22 (tomorrow).
However, a circular issued by the Director General of Health Services on June 19 prevented FSL from holding the elections on June 22, FSL President Anura de Silva and Secretary Jaswar Umar told the ‘Daily Mirror’ yesterday.
The FSL elections which was scheduled to be held on May 30, June 1 and June 7 was postponed because of the spike in Covid-19 cases.
The Director General of Health Services has pointed out that assembling 196 officials representing 63 leagues affiliated to the FSL for the elections in one place, which would contravene travel restrictions and corona regulations, as the reason for postponement.
Meanwhile, according to the circular issued by the Sports Ministries, it is mandatory for national sports bodies to conduct their elections before June 30.
Football officials would be seeking the advice of Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa today on the possibility of holding the FSL elections before June 30, Umar said.
