Gateway College Under-12 Girls’ Team claimed victory at the Inter-International Schools Football Tournament.

In a thrilling final held at the Moragusmulla Grounds, Gateway edged past the British School in a penalty shootout, winning 3-2 after the match ended 1-1 in regular time.

The Gateway Girls had an impressive tournament run, topping the group stage with wins over the British School (2-1), Royal Institute (3-0), and CIS Colombo (1-0).

In the semifinal, they defeated the Overseas School of Colombo 2-1, setting the stage for a well-deserved triumph in the final.

Notably, Griyada Hapukotuwa was awarded the Best Goal-keeper.

In the same tournament, Gateway Colombo Under-12 Boys’ Team secured third place, despite not conceding a single goal throughout the competition.

The Boys played outstanding attacking football, winning their group matches against Elizabeth Moir (1-0), the Overseas School (2-0) and the British School (3-0).

In the quarterfinals, they defeated Horizon 2-0 but were edged out by Lyceum Nugegoda in the semi-finals after a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw.
The Boys then went on to beat Elizabeth Moir again on penalties to secure third place.

These results underscore the growing popularity of football within Gateway’s junior section, with Girls’ football making significant strides in recent years.

Gateway’s consistent development of young football talent has earned them the distinction of being the only international school qualified to play in Division 1 of the All-Island Schools Football.
