Gateway Rowers shine at Asian Rowing Indoor Championships in Malaysia

Gateway College’s Jaanya Kumarawadu, Chareen Jayakody, and Oneli Chandrasekara 

Gateway College once again brought honour to Sri Lanka with three of its top rowers competing for our country at the prestigious Asian Rowing Indoor Championships. Held on August 10th and 11th at Straits Quay Retail Marina in Penang, Malaysia, the event was organised by the Malaysian Rowing Association in collaboration with the Asian Rowing Federation.

Gateway’s standout athletes—Oneli Chandrasekara, Chareen Jayakody, and Jaanya Kumarawadu—earned significant accolades at the championships. Chareen Jayakody and Oneli Chandrasekara each secured a gold medal, while Jaanya Kumarawadu distinguished herself with three silver medals.

The championships featured a diverse range of competitors from across Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Iraq. This event, recognised as one of the premier indoor rowing competitions in the region, highlighted the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of the participating athletes.
