Gayanthika Abeyratne won first place in the women’s 800m and Aruna Darshana clinched second place in the men’s 400m representing Sri Lanka at the 33rd Shizuoka International Invitational Athletic Stage 1 competition which began in Japan yesterday (3) under the supervision of IAAF.
This is a meet where athletes are graded A, B and C and it is significant that Abeyratne and Darshana representing Sri Lanka competed under grade ‘A’.
Abeyratne finished her event with a time of 2:04.35 secs while Darshan returned a time of 45.59 secs which was his best finish in the competition, coming third overall despite his second place on track in his event.
Nilani Ratnayake (Women’s 3000m Steeplechase) and Sarangi Silva (Women’s Long Jump) are also scheduled to compete in this meet.
The second stage of the meet is scheduled to be held on May 6.
