Title-contender for the Nippon Paint Rugby League 2022, Havelock Sports Club and Police Sports Club will play for the late Gamini Fernando Trophy.

Gamini was a former Trinitian who did well in rugby and cricket for his school, playing the oval-shaped ball game under the late Ken de Joodt (1958) and the late Denzil Kobbekaduwa (1959). He later played for the Havelock Sports Club from 1961 to 1969 and led the Park Club in 1967. He led the Park Club to a win in the Clifford Cup knockout. He prematurely retired two years later, in 1969. Coming back as the Head Coach in 1974, he guided the Havies once again to win the knockout trophy.

A former national player, a leading referee and a fine administrator, he was also a national coach, national selector, President of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees and President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union.

Because of his great love for rugby, Gamini was dedicated to uplifting standards not only at his own club, but to whoever requested his leadership. He also coached the Police outfit from 1980–1982.

The date of the encounter will be announced in the near future.
