The Sri Lanka U19 team began their campaign of the ICC U19 World Cup with a win by 39 runs on D/L method in a rain shortened match against the Zimbabwe U19 played at Kimberley. South Africa yesterday.
Zimbabwe in their run chase of 205 runs was on 30 for 3 having faced 13.2 overs when rain forced the umpires to stop the match.
On resumption Zimbabwe was set a revised target of 129 runs in 22 overs but they succumbed to Sri Lanka 19’s bowling trio Malsha Tharupathi who bagged four scalps, Ruvishan Perera and Vishwa Lahiru and was bundled out for 89 runs.
Earlier in the day the Sri Lanka U19’s invited to take first lease of the wicket was struggling on 12 for 3 and was rescued by two valuable partnerships first of 54 runs for the fourth wicket between Ravishan de Silva and Rusanda Gamage and the other of 80 runs for the eighth wicket between Dinura Kalupahana who made a top score of 60 in 55 balls inclusive of six boundaries and two sixes and Sharujan Shanmuganathan who remained unbeaten on 41 which helped the side to make a modest score of 204 runs.
