The Sri Lanka junior girls and boys tasted success on day one of the ITF Asia/Oceania U14 Pre-Qualifying Junior Tennis Team Championship when came out on top against Guam and UAE in the first round matches played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, yesterday.
In the girls category girls’ number one player Sandithi Usgodaarachchi and Akesha de Silva and Sandithi partnered by Annaya Norbert won their singles matches with ease. In the boys category number one player Risith Somaratne and Ashley de Silva in the singles events and de Silva along Mayooran Kubherane in the doubles too won their matches with minimum of fuss. Thirty five countries are in the fray comprising of 21 and 14 in the boys’ and girls’ categories.
The Championship is scheduled to end on February 17. Today Sri Lanka girls will confront Lebanon or Kirgizstan and boys will meet Lebanon.
Results:Girls - Sri Lanka beat Guam 3-0 Singles - Sandithi Usgodaarachchi (Sri Lanka) beat Leah San Augustin (Guam) 2-0 (6/0, 6/0). Akesha de Silva (Sri Lanka) beat Faith Perera (Guam) 2-0 (6/0, 6/0) .
Doubles - Sandithi Usgodaarachchi/Annaya Norbert (Sri Lanka) beat Faith Perera/Leah Augustin (Guam) 2-0 (6/1, 6/1).
Boys - Sri Lanka beat UAE 3-0 Singles - Risith Somaratna (Sri Lanka) beat Rashid Almaeeni (UAE) 3/0 (6/0 6/0). Ashley de Silva (Sri Lanka) beat Mohamed Al Ali (UAE) 2-0 (6/1 6/0). Doubles - Ashley de Silva/ Mayooran Kubherane (Sri Lanka) beat Abdulla Janahi/Rashid Almaeeni (UAE) 2-0 (6/0 6/0 ).
