Peterite Centre Yumath Shihara on his way for a try
By Shamseer Jaleel at Nittawela
St. Peter’s College demonstrated their superior class when they beat Vidyartha College, 42 points (6 tries, 6 conversions) to 3 points (1 penalty) in their Schools Under-19 Rugby League encounter, which concluded at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium last evening.
At the short breather, the lads from Bambalapitiya led 21-3.
The home team played well during the majority of the first half with some attacking moves, but their phases lacked the finishing touches, and they ran out of ideas on finding the gaping hole in the Peterite defence. Further, St. Peter’s defence stood firm.
Peterites, on their part, failed to play territory game as their lineout throwing let them down badly, but later in the initial half they started working their speedy three quarters who were unstoppable. The defending league champions not only ended round 1 undefeated but also collected a bonus point in the Central Hills as well.
Two tries from Yumath Shihara plus another by Salith Gallage and accurate conversions by Rahul Peter took the visitors to a comfortable 21-3 lead at the short breather. Vidyartha put over a solitary penalty through Rusith Thamodhya.
After the turnaround, the Peterites scored three more tries through Vishanka Silva, Shanuka Perera, and Dulaj Navodya. Peter, who had a great game, converted all six tries.
