Kalinga and Prasad flop in finals

Sprinter Kalinga Kumarage and long jumper Prasad Wimalasiri were unable to deliver Sri Lanka’s first Gold Medal in the 2018 Asian Games continued in Indonesia on Sunday (26), despite making it to the finals of their respective events.

Kumarage finished eighth in the Men’s 400 metres event while finishing almost two seconds behind the winner Abdalelah Hassan of Qatar, clocking a time of 46.49 seconds.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s long jump, Wimalasiri leapt 7.86m on his first attempt but failed to better over his next six jumps with the last three of those being waved off.

Badminton

Sri Lanka’s hopes of winning a medal in badminton were dashed when the combination of Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Goonethillake was knocked-out from the Men’s Doubles quarter-finals yesterday.

They suffered a straight set 12-21, 15-21 defeat at the hands of the world champions from China, Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen in just under half an hour.

Volleyball

Meanwhile Sri Lanka came from behind with a fine performance to beat the Maldives 3-1 in their Men’s volleyball encounter.

Sri Lanka lost the opening set 16-25 but came back magnificently to win the remaining there sets 25-18, 27-25 and 25-15 respectively.

With this win Sri Lanka moved into the 13-16 place play-off semi-final.

Hockey

Sri Lanka recorded a morale boosting 3-1 win over Indonesia in their Men’s Hockey Tournament Pool ‘A’ fixture worked off at the GBK Hockey Field, yesterday.

This was also Sri Lanka’s second successive win in the tournament following their earlier success against Hong Kong.

After a scoreless opening half, Sandaruwan Priyalanka opened the scoring for Sri Lanka in the 23rd minute.

Forward Wahid Hakim produced the equaliser for Indonesia when he converted a penalty in the 37th minute.

However, Dhammika Ranasinghe struck twice both through penalties in the 41st and 53rd minute respectively and to provide Sri Lanka a comfortable win.

Sri Lanka will take on India in their final group stage match on Tuesday (28).
