Medhani Jayamanne qualifies in 100m for World Junior Athletic Meet

Lumbini College schoolgirl Medhani Jayamanne qualified to take part in the 100 metres at the 2021 World Junior (Under-20) Athletics Championship yesterday. Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) conducted the final trial at Sugathadasa Stadium to select participants for the August 17 to 22 World Juniors event to be held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Leading junior athletic star Jayamanne clocked 11.85 seconds in the trials which is the qualifying standard for the World Junior Athletics Championship. Jayamanne already qualified to take part in the 200 metre event at the 60th Indian Inter-State Athletics Championship. Meanwhile, four athletics have achieved the qualifying standard for the World Junior event.

They are Medhani Jayamanne (100m, 200m women) from Lumbini College, Colombo, Shanika Lakshani (800m women) from Holy Cross College, Gampaha, Tharushi Karunaratne (800m women) from A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala, and Isuru Kaushalya Abeywardena (400m men) from Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama.
