Mercantile Hockey League 2024 HNB triumphs over Browns in thrilling opener

The Mercantile Hockey League 2024 kicked off in spectacular fashion on July 13th at the Air Force Hockey Complex in Ekala. This year’s edition features 13 teams divided into three competitive divisions, showcasing the finest talent across corporate Sri Lanka.

In a highly anticipated clash from the A Division, HNB faced off against Browns in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. HNB secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 4-3. The match saw HNB dominating the first half with a commanding 3-0 lead, only for Browns to mount an impressive comeback in the second half, levelling the score to 3-3. However, HNB managed to regain their composure and netted the decisive goal in the final quarter, clinching the win in dramatic fashion.

The opening day also witnessed other intense encounters:

Sampath Banks vs. MAS Holdings ended in a 1-1 draw, while Seylan Bank and Hayleys battled to a 1-1 stalemate, and John Keells Holdings narrowly defeated HSBC 5-4 in a high-scoring thriller. Looking ahead, the schedule for next week’s matches on July 20th is set to feature a compelling match lineup as follows:
