The Sports Ministry and the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) have informed all National Sports Associations (NSA) that they should start national pool training before January 31 in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held from July 28 to August 8 2022 in Birmingham, England.
A total of 5,064 athletes are set to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 20 sports disciplines.
NOCSL President Suresh Subramaniam said that they intend to field competitors in few selected sports including badminton, beach volleyball, boxing, judo, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.
The Sports Ministry and the NOCSL are also planning to keep the number of competitors and the officials to less than 50.
The NOCSL has also informed national sports associations to estimate the number of medals their respective athletes could win at the Commonwealth Games before December 31, 2021.
However, NOCSL President Subramaniam said that they are yet to receive any response from the respective national sports associations about their preparations.
Sri Lanka has been represented at the Commonwealth Games since 1938 and have accounted for 22 medals including five Gold Medals, nine Silver Medals and eight Bronze Medals.
Sri Lanka won six medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia including one Silver Medal and five bronze medals.
Weightlifters won one Silver Medal and two Bronze Medals and the remaining three Bronze Medals were won by boxers.
On that occasion Sri Lanka fielded a 79-member contingent including 50 Men and 29 Women in 14 sports disciplines.
