Top order half-centuries put Kandy in a commanding position in the final of the National Super League against Galle, ending their first day on 288 for 2 at the Galle International Stadium.

Openers Kasun Vidura and Kamil Mishara gave the side a solid start, putting on 123 runs before they were separated with the dismissal of Mishara for 56.

Vidura struck three boundaries and a six to contribute 71 before, like Mishara, he fell to spinner Dhananjaya de Silva 11 runs later.

Jaffna’s bowlers were unable to make any further success as the two leading run scorers of the tournament, Oshada Fernando and skipper Kamindu Mendis, put on an unbroken stand of 154 runs, before bad light put an early end to day’s play.

Fernando remained unbeaten on 91 which included ten boundaries and a six while skipper Mendis was 57 not out, with three boundaries.

The match will be continued today.
