Viren Nettasinghe in action

Sri Lanka’s young badminton star Viren Nettasinghe was knocked-out from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after he crashed to his second successive defeat in the Men’s Singles Tournament at the La Chapelle Arena in Paris yesterday.

Nettasinghe was beaten in straight sets 9-21, 19-21 in the Group ‘B’ encounter against Spain’s Pablo Abian with the match lasting for 39 minutes.

However, Nettasinghe, with a World Ranking of 70 under his name, was able to provide some anxious moments to his more fancied opponent by stretching the second set to 21 minutes.
Earlier, Nettasinghe was completely outplayed by the World No.62 in the opening set, which lasted for only 16 minutes.

Nettasinghe suffered a similar defeat at the hands of his Malaysian opponent and World No.7 Zii Jia Lee on Sunday.
