Northern head points table in Independence Trophy football

Northern heads the points table in the Independence Trophy Provincial Football tournament securing ten points and remaining unbeaten after 16 matches.   
Organised by Football Sri Lanka (FSL), a total of 33 matches will be played until February 28. 

 
Northern have played four matches, winning three and drawing one.   


Sabaragamuwa (8) and Eastern (6) are also unbeaten and are lying in second and third place respectively, having played four matches, winning two and drawing two.   
Western who have many players from the national pool in the side are lying in fifth position. They have lost two, won one and drawn one.   


The contenders for the Golden Boot are M. Nitharshan (Northern) with four goals followed by Mohamed Hasmeer (Western), A.H.M. Mushfik (Sabaragamuwa) and Supun Dananjaya (Southern) with three goals apiece.   

 

 

Ten players from Uva (6) and Central (4) have been slapped with two-match bans for an altercation in their match played at Kantalai.   
Stage five of the tournament will take place on February 10 and 11 in Bogambara Stadium, Kandy and Jayatilleke Stadium, Nawalapitiya.
