The Nuwara Eliya Regional Junior Open 2023 not only provided a platform for young golfers to showcase their talents but also served as an inspiration for future tournaments to continue cultivating and nurturing golfing talent in Sri Lanka

Reshan Algama was in prime form at the Nuwara Eliya Regional Junior Open 2023 golf event which took place at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) course last weekend. Prima Sunrise Bread sponsored the event.
Featuring boys between the ages of 15 to 18 years old, Algama, already world-ranked at just 15 years old, emerged victorious. Algama, who was training in the division for the first time, showcased his talent by finishing a remarkable 17 strokes ahead of his nearest competitor.
With a total score of 144, Algama also played the only par round of the entire tournament on the second day, cementing his dominance. Asian International School boy, Jevahn Sathasivam fought hard to secure second place with a total score of 161.
In the Gold Girls’ division, T. Atshaya emerged as the champion with an impressive score of 202.
Anumi Karunathilake finished in second place, demonstrating her skills on the course.
The Silver division boys’ witnessed a thrilling battle, with outstation boys from Anuradhapura showcasing their talent. Janeesh Weerasinghe claimed first place with a two-round score of 157, narrowly edging out his teammate Adhithya Weerasinghe (158).
Thejas Rathis Kanth and Keshav Algama tied for third place with scores of 161, but Thejas secured the position due to a better performance on day two.
In the Silver Division Girls’ segment Dilini Amarawansa comfortably secured first place with a score of 192, while Kaitlyn Norton finished in second place with 201 strokes.
In the Boys’ Bronze division also displayed their golfing prowess. Yehansa Senanayake emerged as the clear winner with a score of 151, while Lavidu Premarathna claimed second place with 157.
Genuli Weerakoon dominated the Bronze Division girls’ category, finishing in first place with a score of 199. Vihara Herath secured second place. In the youngest segment, Copper Division, Yuvan Rathis Kanth displayed his up and coming talent by securing first place with a score of 78 over nine holes. Jaeden Sathasivam ended in second place.

It was refreshing to note that the Nuwara-Eliya Regional Junior Open 2023, attracted the highest number of entries since Covid-19, recording participation of 69 entries in the different age group categories.
The continued sponsorship of Prima Sunrise Bread, the enthusiasm and support of parents and the activation of the juniors from Anuradhapura Junior Golfers, the Ananda College Junior Golf Club and the juniors from Colombo and the Home Club NEGC ensured the success of the Regional Golf Tournament.
