This was revealed by the Deputy President and Chairman of SLR Tournament Committee, Group Captain Nalin de Silva during a media briefing held at the SLR Headquarters in Colombo yesterday.
He further said that this opportunity will enable a wider player-base including all ruggerites who were affected and could not take part in club level rugby during the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also, only those players who participate in this tournament will be selected for the National Sevens Squad, which will be picked by the SLR National Selection Committee. This event will also serve as a selection procedure to pick the Men’s and Women’s National Teams in preparation for the Asian Sevens Series to be held in Thailand, Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October and November. This is also the first time that the tournament is to be worked off for three days unlike in the past and the matches will commence at 8.30 a.m. each day.
All registered clubs and provincial unions will be contacted by SLR in the coming days for their confirmation before September 16.
