Ranhidha Alwis of the Army SC shattered a 19-year-old record in the men’s under-20 shot put event on the second day of the 64th Junior National Athletic Championships 2024, which continued at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama yesterday. This meet is also the final selection trial to form the junior national athletic pool in preparation for the fourth South Asian Junior Athletic Championships 2024, which will be held in September in Chennai, India.
Alwis produced a fine effort of 16.69m in the men’s shot put final, bettering the previous mark of 16.56m set by W.L.O.U.R. Perera of Saranankara MMV, Bingiriya, in 2005.
Altogether, 10 new meet records were established on the second day of the championship, conducted by Sri Lanka Athletic.
