SL to compete at SAFF Women’s Football Tournament

The Sri Lanka Women’s National Football Team will leave for Nepal on September (2) to participate in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) organised Women’s Football Tournament, which will be held from September 6 to 16 at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu.  


A total of seven countries will compete in this tournament with India, Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan in Group ‘A’ and Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka in Group ‘B’.  


Sri Lanka will take on Bhutan in their opening fixture on September (9) and will face Nepal on September (12) in the preliminary round matches.  


Sri Lanka reached the SAFF Women’s Football Tournament semi-finals in 2012, 2014 and 2019. India has won all five previous tournaments held in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019.  


Sri Lanka is placed 153rd in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings while India is placed 58th in the rankings.  
The Sri Lanka Women’s Football Squad will be announced before August (31), Football Sri Lanka (FSL) President Umar Jaswar said yesterday.
