Sri Lanka Athletic (SLA) has decided to participate in the 2024 World Relay Championships with two teams - Men’s 4x400m and the Mixed Relay Event.

The aim is to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, said SLA President Major General Palitha Fernando.

The World Relay Championships 2024 will be held on May 4 and 5 next year in Nassau, Bahamas.

The Sri Lanka Mixed Relay Team is in 36th position (3:15.41s) according to the IAAF World Rankings. They were disqualified due to an illegal run in the Hangzhou Asian Games in China.

The Sri Lanka Men’s 4x400m Relay Team has a best performance of 3:01.56s. The SLA President stressed that if both teams participate in the 2024 World Relay Championships, they have the opportunity to qualify for the Paris Games.

The final day for the Paris Olympics entry standard is July 31. No athlete in Sri Lanka has qualified for the Olympics so far. (Susil Premalal)
