School Games Boxing Meet begins today

A total of 255 pugilists will participate in the 37th All-Island School Games Boxing Championships conducted by the Ministry of Education and to be held from October 21 to 23 at the Royal College Boxing Arena in Colombo.   


A total of 214 boys and 41 girls boxers from 73 schools will compete in this meet, sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited under their brand Nestomalt.   


The Boys’ Championship will be conducted in three categories, senior, youth and junior while the Girls’ Championship will be restricted to the youth class.   


Meanwhile, the Stage-one of the All-Island National School Games will commence today at ten different venues in the country.   


The events that will be conducted are physical education (Trincomalee), beach volleyball (Kalpitiya) wrestling (Negombo) boxing (Colombo), weightlifting (Polonnaruwa) cycling (Anuradhapura), taekwondo (Kegalle), judo (Nawalapitiya) gymnastics (Colombo) and tennis (Colombo).   


The All-Island National School Games have been revived after a lapse of two years with over 35,000 athletes competing for honours in 31 different sports disciplines.   
The fourth and final stage of the All-Island National School Games, which includes track and field events, will be held from November 16 to 20 at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
