Sri Lankan swimmer Ganga Senevirathne put up a pleasing performance to win heat one of the Women’s 100m backstroke event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France yesterday.

Competing at the Paris La Defence Arena, Senevirathne, who qualified with a wild card and 688 FINA points, clocked in at 1:04.26s, while marking a significant milestone in her career and for Sri Lankan swimming.

This attempt beat her season best of 1:04.93s. While it did not quite match her personal best of 1:04.08s, it demonstrated her commitment to excel in Olympic waters.

Despite her fine effort, she was placed 30th out of 36 competitors based on her timing in heat one, which included four swimmers, and did not advance to the semi-finals.

Katharine Berkoff returned the best timing in this event with a performance of 57.99s.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Kyle Abeysinghe will compete in the Men’s 100m freestyle first round event today.
