Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has been entrusted with the task of appointing an Election Committee within 14 days, to look into the activities relating to the Football Sri Lanka (FSL) elections.

The election of new office-bearers for Football Sri Lanka (FSL) will take place within the next 69 days starting from Wednesday (26), as per an agreement reached at the Court of Appeal (COA), hearing on the current crisis in the country’s football governing body.

The agreement was reached when a case on a writ-petition filed by FSL former President, Jaswar Umar and FSL former Secretary, Upali Hewage was taken for hearing.
Umar and Hewage filed a petition challenging the legality of the Gazette notification issued by the Sports Minister dated September 22, 2022, which dissolved the sport governing bodies that did not duly hold its elections and AGMs, including the FSL administration.

As per the agreement a special general meeting is scheduled to be convened within 14 days to appoint an election committee.

Counsels Eraj de Silva, Daminda Wijerathne, Zul Lathufi and Dimuthu Kuruppuarachchi appeared for the petitioner party.
Forty football leagues had submitted an intervening motion asking for an early election for the FSL.
