The Torrington hostel and kitchen which comes under the Sports Ministry will be shut down temporarily with immediate effect by the Department of Sports Development (DSD).
Director General DSD Amal Edirisooriya informed 12 sports bodies of this decision on April 13.

This is a result of the inability to provide food and other services because of the adverse economic situation in the country.
Torrington hostel houses over 100 athletes while the kitchen provides meals daily.

Athletes from 12 sports bodies are in the Torrington hostel in preparation for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England from July 28 to August 8 and several international events.

They are national poolists in weightlifting, table tennis, kabaddi, netball, wushu, squash, badminton, karate do, swimming, para games and hockey.
