By Shamseer Jaleel
The Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) conducted ranking tournament commenced in picturesque surroundings with seasoned professionals and talented amateurs showcased their skills and setting the stage for an exhilarating competition at the Victoria Golf Resort course in Rajawella on day 1.
Professionals in the field put on an impressive performance with K. Prabagaran emerging as the star of the day, shooting a remarkable two under par 71.
Amateurs faced a challenging start on Day 1.
However, amidst the fluctuating scores, seasoned amateur golfer emerged at the forefront. Chanaka Perera, with a resilient attitude, led the amateurs’ leader-board with a three over par 75. Joining him in the joint top position was Utchitha Ranasinghe, showcasing potential for a fierce amateur competition on the last three days of the event.
For Reshan Algama, who previously made history by securing consecutive victories in this tournament, the opening round proved to be a stumbling block.
Recording a somewhat mediocre round of 10 over par, Algama now faces an uphill task to defend his title.
Algama’s brother, Keshav Algama, made his debut appearance in the tournament.
Haroon Aslam playing some consistent golf during his short holiday in Sri Lanka away from his golf and studies in USA too had a tough start ending in eighth place on day one. Playing in his home course he too is expected to bounce back in the remaining three days for a better ranking.
The stage is set for a stiff competition in the three days to come.
With exciting golf ahead, the tournament is sure to showcase the very best the sport has to offer.
