Hasantha Sehan Dilranga of A. Rathnayaka Central College, Walala, who is considered to be Sri Lanka’s last medal hope, will participate in the 1,500m Boys final today (June 7) in the 12th Asian Junior (U-20) Athletic Championship 2023. The four-day championship in South Korea will end today.
“Hasantha is in a good mental state to face the competition, so there is hope for a medal from him too,” said team coach Susantha Fernando.
Ranindi Pehansa Gamage of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya was placed 12th in the girls high jump finals yesterday.
The only Sri Lanka athlete to compete yesterday, she managed to clear 1.60 metres.
Nearly 1,500 athletes from 45 countries in the Asian region participated in this tournament.
The Sri Lanka team consisting of eight athletes has won five medals (two gold, one silver and two bronze) to be placed in the sixth position in the medals tally at the 12th Asian Junior Athletic Championship.
Among the Sri Lanka athletes, Tharushi Karunarathna is the only athlete to win three medals. She won the 800m girls and 4x400m Mixed Relay events and silver in the 400m girls final.
