Sri Lanka is eager to capitalise on their momentum and clinch the lead in the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe when they clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium today (08). The first encounter was washed out after Charith Asalanka’s outstanding century, adding a touch of disappointment to an otherwise impressive performance.

Before the weather intervened, Asalanka showcased his batting prowess, amassing 101 runs off 95 deliveries, featuring four sixes and five boundaries. Under the captaincy of Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka elected to bat first at R. Premadasa Stadium on Saturday, concluding their innings with a total of 273 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs.

Zimbabwe gained an early advantage as their seamer, Richard Ngarava, left an impact in the game. In the fifth ball of the first over, Ngarava dismissed Avishka Fernando, who was yet to score, caught behind by wicketkeeper Clive Madande.

Despite this setback, Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama established a promising partnership, contributing 63 runs for the second wicket. However, Ngarava struck again, dismissing Samarawickrama for a commendable 41 runs, caught at slip by Craig Erwin. Mendis, with 46 runs to his credit, was eventually run out.

The excitement was abruptly halted by rain, with Zimbabwe struggling at 12/2 in four overs. Dilshan Madushanka’s double-wicket had given Sri Lanka the advantage over Zimbabwe before the rain interrupted the game.

All eyes will be on Asalanka to continue his form, while Mendis’ tactical nous will be tested against a determined Zimbabwean team. With the series wide open, the second ODI is poised to be a nail-biting encounter.

Despite it being the weekend when the opening match of the ODI series was held, a noticeable decline in attendance was observed at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Saturday. There is a growing concern that the disappointing performance of the Sri Lanka team in the last World Cup has adversely affected its popularity.
