Sri Lankan boxers advance to quarter-finals

Sri Lankan boxers Rukmal Prasanna and Sanjeewani Cooray won their respective bouts to advance to the quarter-finals at the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England yesterday.

Prasanna edged out Shaffi Bakari of Kenya 5-0 on points in the Men’s 54kg bantamweight class bout while Cooray had the better of M. Merine of Pakistan 5-0 on points in the Women’s 57kg featherweight first round bout.
Meanwhile, Chamara Dharmawardana lost his quarter-final contest in the Men’s 73kg judo championship against Faye Njie of Gambia with the fight lasting for just over three minutes.

Earlier, Dharmawardana had the better of Tirelo Lekoko of Botswana in the elimination round contest in just over four minutes of time.
