Nesarasa Daksitha of the Northern Province, W. A. M. R. Wijesuriya of the Eastern Province and Vidusha Lakmali of the North Central Province established new records on the opening day of the 48th National Sports Games (NSG) Athletic Championships 2024, which began at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.
Wijesuriya shattered a 29 year-old record while competing in the Women’s 10,000m as she clocked 34:35.9s and bettered the previous record of 35:03.0s held by Nilmini Jayasena in 1995.
In addition, Dakshitha set up a new record in the Women’s pole vault as she produced a fine effort of 3.51m and shattered her own previous record of 3.50m set in 2023.
Meanwhile, Lakmali set up a new record in the Women’s discus throw event as she cleared 45.50m and renewed her own record of 44.59m set in 2023.
In the other events Dilhani Lekamge (Sabaragamuwa) won the Women’s javelin throw, V. Vakshan (Central) won the Women’s 5,000m, Madhushani Herath (Uva) won the Women’s triple jump, Western Province won the 4X100m Women’s relay and Southern Province won the Men’s 4X100m relay Gold Medals.
