Thenuk Fernando of Trinity about to pass with Thisanga Dissanayake coming in support
By Shamseer Jaleel in Kandy
Trinity College bounced back to winning ways when they defeated Vidyartha College by 20 points (two tries, one penalty try, one penalty) to 10 points (two tries) in their Dialog Schools Under-20 rugby league encounter, which concluded at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday.
At the short breather, Trinity led 12-0.
Trinity had plenty of possession and dominated play throughout the entire first half. However, they struggled to convert their territorial advantage into points. Despite the challenging ball-handling conditions, both teams put up a strong performance. Dilshan Balasuriya stood out for Vidyartha.
Chamendra Dhanapala, Rushen Bandaranayake, Anuhas Kodituwakku, Abith Jameel, and Dehan Waragoda played exceptionally well
for Trinity.
Trinity drew first blood in the 18th minute when their captain, Attaab Manzil, touched down. Vidyartha conceded a penalty try after collapsing the scrum multiple times.
Trinity continued their dominance after the break, scoring through a forwards’ rush, and Thenuk Fernando touched down for Trinity to make the score 17-0.
In the last 15 minutes of the game, Vidyartha fought back and threatened to score with each of their moves. They managed to score two spectacular tries through Dilshan Balasuriya to alter the score to 17-10.
Vidyartha had found their rhythm, but Trinity sealed the game when Mohamed Shan was accurate with a penalty kick to take the game away from Vidyartha, winning it 20-10 in
the end.
