The final of the Under 19 Division One Tier ‘B’ limited over tournament between Thurstan and Lumbini MV played at the Surrey Village ground in Maggona yesterday was called off due to bad weather which saw the two teams being declared joint champions.
Thurstan chasing a victory target of 179 runs was on 48 for 2 having faced 11 overs when a heavy shower stopped proceedings and with no play being possible due to the wet outfield the umpires were forced to call off play.
The morning session of proceedings saw Lumbini MV invited to take first lease of the wicket falling into deep trouble as they lost the top six wickets with the score on just 31 runs in the 17th over before Dinitha Prabanka who made an unbeaten knock of 85 runs rescued them by sharing two valuable partnerships first of 98 runs for the seventh wicket with Dumindu Sewmina and 47 runs for the eighth wicket with Pasindu Mahisha which helped them to end with a respectable score of 178 runs.
It was the second time in over two decades the last in the 1999/2000 season that Lumbini MV became joint champions, the previous being with Maris Stella Negombo.
